Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The LaLumiere laboratory is committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It is an ethical imperative and obligation that we live by these principles and strive to implement them in our work environment. Thus, the primary reason that our laboratory is committed to these principles is that we believe it is the right thing to do. We also know that teams, as well as science as a whole, are stronger and more successful when they are diverse, equitable, and inclusive for all. Our individual identities are important to all of us, and differences in background are what help promote a robust exchange of ideas.

Equity means we must take into consideration the advantages and disadvantages everyone starts with and ensure equal access to opportunities. As part of our commitment to this, we will strive to assist all lab members in reaching their highest potential.

Moreover, we are committed to ensuring that we have an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected. A diverse group that does not make everyone feel included is not sufficient. We want a climate that embraces differences so that all can feel welcomed.

As a laboratory, we have been fortunate to be a part of multiple programs at the University of Iowa that promote the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including the Summer Research Opportunities Program and the Iowa Biosciences Academy. Going forward, we hope we can continue to improve our contributions to these important issues as well as continue to improve our own laboratory commitment to these principles.
